How long has San Pedro Meals on Wheels been in existence?

  • San Pedro Meals on Wheels was started in 1972 by church women.  An ecumenical group of women wanted a local project to serve the needs of people unable to provide daily nutritious meals for themselves.

What is San Pedro's relationship to the national Meals on Wheels program?

  • San Pedro Meals on Wheels was developed with the same concept in mind as the national program, but is altogether independent from the national organization.  It was chartered by the State of California in July, 1972.

Is San Pedro Meals on Wheels a not-for-profit organization?

How Do I make a Donation?

  • Donations are accepted at San Pedro Meals on Wheels, 731 S. Averill Ave., San Pedro, CA  90731 and are acknowledged with a receipt.

My Dr’s office needs San Pedro Meals on Wheels information in their reception area.  How do I help them?

  • We will gladly supply local doctor's offices, the local hospital and convalescent homes with materials detailing our program and service costs.  Please contact us for more information.

How do I contact San Pedro Meals on Wheels?

Is Meals on Wheels available for a trial period to see if I like the service... and food?

  • We encourage a two week service trial, which is payable in advance. 

Is lunch and dinner delivered every day to my home?

  • Our service consists of two (2) meals-a-day, Monday-Friday.  One meal is hot, and one is a sandwich with fruit or salad.  To see a sample of menu items offered click here.

What time will my lunch and dinner be delivered?

  • Both meals are delivered to your home at approximately 11:00 AM. 

How much does it cost?

  • The cost is $7 per day, which will cover the cost of lunch & dinner.

Will I receive a bill so I remember to pay?  

  • You will be billed every two (2) weeks.  Statements can be delivered with your meal, or can be mailed to you.

It takes me a very long time to get from my bed/chair to answer the door; any suggestions?

  • Food will be delivered to your door.  With a signed authorization our volunteer may enter and leave the food in your home.  If you prefer, your food may be left in an approved container outside your home. 

What if my Meal is delivered while I'm Not at Home?

  • Food can be left in an approved container outside your home, or you can choose to cancel your meal(s) for the day.  Please call to cancel delivery no later than 9:30 AM on the day of anticipated delivery.

What should I do if I go on Vacation or another trip, and don’t need delivery?

  • Scheduled deliveries may be stopped and can begin again upon your return.  Please call us to schedule, (310) 832-7335.

What if I have special dietary needs?

  • We are unable to provide specific food(s) catered to individual dietary needs.  We can, however, take note of significant food allergies (i.e. egg, peanut butter, etc) and will make every effort to avoid delivering food(s), which include these items.

Can I make special food requests?

  • No.

What is the phone number and email address for information and who do I talk to?

Do I have to volunteer every day?

  • No.  Some volunteer one day a week, every week.  Others volunteer two days a week, and some substitute when they can.

Do I have to volunteer all day?

  • No.  The office closes at 1 PM.  Those who drive or deliver provide approximately two (2) hours of service on the days they volunteer.  Schedules vary.

What are the Meals on Wheels volunteer opportunities?

  • There are always opportunities available for drivers, deliverers, and kitchen help.  There are occasional volunteer opportunities for maintenance, cleaning and clerical assistance.  Delivery teams are made up of at least one "veteran" volunteer for several days, so that newer volunteers learn about and become comfortable with the program.

I don’t have a car/driver’s license/I don’t drive.  How can I help deliver meals?

  • You can ride in the car with a "partner," carry the meals and deliver them to the client's door.

I don’t walk very well/I walk with a cane/walker/wheelchair/other, but I drive and have a driver’s license.  How can I help deliver meals?

  • We will discuss your volunteer capabilities before you begin to volunteer, and decide together how best to use your time and talent.

I like to cook/work in the kitchen.  Can I volunteer there?

  • Yes.

I like to work with a computer.  Does Meals on Wheels need someone to do that?

  • Occasionally, we do need help from those who are more proficient with computers.

I can do simple office and clerical work.  Does Meals on Wheels need someone to do that?

  • Occasionally, we do need help around the office; help organizing and maintaining.

I saw one of the volunteers wearing a San Pedro Meals on Wheels t-shirt.  If I volunteer, can I get one?

  • A Meals on Wheels "T-Shirt" is given free-of-charge to each volunteer.
